What a find. This fabulous large barn conversion on a working farm on the Llyn Peninsula is perfect for a happy family holiday in North Wales. With four generous-sized bedrooms - two doubles and two twins - it sleeps two to eight guests.
You’ll find Rhiwal on a working dairy farm in the heart of the Llyn countryside. It is a beautiful rural spot with a backdrop of lush green pastures, woodland, and big skies. The barn is remote enough to feel extremely peaceful, but perfectly placed to get out and explore. Pwllheli, Nefyn, Aberdaron and Abersoch are all just a short drive.
A handsome and contemporary rural escape, the cottage has been recently renovated to a very high standard - it is spotlessly presented throughout. Bright and welcoming, and with plenty of room for up to eight guests, it is perfect for a big birthday, special anniversary, or an extended family getaway. The cottage is dog-friendly. The owner has over 25 years experience in TV set design, and along with her background in Art, design and craft, this is evident in the clever styling of the property which includes many of her own upcycled furniture and accessories.
Downstairs, you’ll find a large open plan kitchen diner with plenty of space to cook up your holiday favourites on a range cooker with double oven. There is a large oak dining table, and a separate seating area to one end of the room. We love the earthy exposed oak beams, open shelf storage, and slate floor in this space. It has a warm, homely feel to it.
Large French doors open out from the kitchen diner to an outdoor terrace with views across the garden to the trees and rolling countryside beyond. Perfect for al fresco dining. The garden, by the way, is totally private and fully enclosed with a large lawn. There are decent hammock-stringing trees (and a hammock!) and a couple of swings. It is totally idyllic.
Back inside, and still on the ground floor, you’ll find a large sitting room with a showpiece stone inglenook fireplace. Three comfortable sofas are arranged around the wood burner, which comes with a small supply of logs.
Also downstairs, you’ll find a very handy utility room with a washing machine and an equally handy downstairs bathroom with a shower above the bath. It’s a very easy-living kind of space.
Upstairs, there are four lovely bedrooms, two generous-sized rooms one with a king size bed and the other a super king, and two twins. Each of the rooms is spacious, bright and beautifully presented. The bedrooms sit under the eaves, but there is a generous amount of headroom. Also upstairs, you’ll find two bathrooms - a large family bathroom with shower over bath, and a separate shower room with a large walk-in shower.
Outside this fabulous large barn conversion on a working farm on Pen Llyn, as well as the aforementioned large garden, you’ll find a fantastic separate games barn with pool tables, table tennis, and - our family favourite - table football. It’s a great place to keep the whole family entertained, and perfect rainy-day entertainment to have up your sleeve. Plenty of room for parking up to 5 cars!
Pen Llyn –(Llyn Peninsula) – is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and one of Britain’s oldest pilgrimage routes. On both counts it’s not hard to see why.
An exceptional and dramatic shoreline of coves, cliffs, bays, secret sandy beaches, offshore islands and stacks, wild beating waves – it’s a picture of what an idyllic coastal wilderness might look like.
This fabulous large barn conversion on a working farm on the Pen Llyn is just a couple of miles from the coast, and there are plenty of fantastic local beaches to explore.
The cottage is around 4 miles from the spectacular beaches at Porthdinllaen and Nefyn. Porthdinllaen is home to a beautifully sheltered sandy bay and what is consistently voted one of the best bars in the world – the Ty Coch Inn. An idyllic place for a pint and a ploughman’s, but do check opening times before you visit. There’s also a very decent craft brewery and tap room – Cwrw Llyn – in nearby Nefyn.
Another recommended local beach is the small but lovely sandy bay of Porth Towyn in nearby Tudweiliog. If you fancy some retail therapy as part of the trip, make a beeline for the fab lifestyle emporium of Cwt Tatws whilst you’re there.
The cottage is around nine miles from the seaside town of Pwllheli. This is a real maritime town, with a large marina and sailing community, and some great sandy beaches. You’ll find plenty of shops, cafés, restaurants and bars, and there are a couple of large supermarkets if you need to restock your stores whilst you’re there.
The charming coastal village of Criccieth is around 16 miles away, with its traditional Welsh tearooms, some great places to eat out, as well as some very decent fish & chips. Expect attractive independent shops and some very browsable galleries and antiques. There’s even a traditional Welsh clog maker who still has his workshop in the town. Oh, and a medieval castle to watch over it all. It’s a great place to explore.
This fabulous large barn conversion on a working farm on the Llyn Peninsula is a short drive from some great family activities and adventures, including the petting zoo at Dwyfor Ranch Rabbit Farm (14 miles), Glasfryn Parc with its karting and wakeboarding centre (12 miles), and Bounce Below, Zip World and Llechwedd slate mine at Blaenau Ffestiniog (35 miles).
For slightly more grown-up days out, head to Portmeirion and its Italian style fantasy village (23 miles), or Harlech with its steep winding streets and UNESCO-listed 13th century fortress (30 miles). Caernarfon - the big daddy of all the Welsh fortresses, and home to a thriving harbour town, is around 25 miles.
Or how about a day out on a steam railway whilst you’re here? The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland railway are a splendid way to see North Wales, with regular departures from Porthmadog (20 miles). Abersoch, with its buzzing bistros, bars, boutiques and beaches, and Aberdaron, with its timeless seaside village and beach, are each around ten miles from the cottage.

At the Nefyn showground roundabout (Bryncynan Pub where the A497 and B4412 meet), turn onto a small country road, direction Dinas and Llaniestyn. Follow this fast but single lane road for 2.5 miles. Turn right onto a concrete road (dorma house behind pine trees on the corner). Follow this farm track for 300m. Bear right as you approach some farm buildings. Please do not turn left into Cefnleisiog Farm, as this is a private driveway. Continue straight on the main track to Rhiwal. Rhiwal is the next property on your right.
