A beautiful secluded cottage at the foot of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Clogwyn-Mawr is ideally placed for walkers and lovers of dramatic landscapes. Sleeps up to four guests in one double bedroom and one twin. Gorgeous mountain views.
You’ll find this wonderful rural hideaway just outside the village of Rhyd Ddu at the foot of Cymru’s highest peak. If you’re familiar with Eryri, you might know that the village has given its name to one of the nicest routes up Yr Wyddfa, which is relatively less well trodden than the Miner’s or Pyg track, so a great option if you’d prefer to avoid the tourist crowds.
The cottage is a gorgeous barn conversion, packed full of character, but with some great contemporary creds and style. It has been recently renovated to a very high standard, using locally sourced materials and craft. We love the restful natural materials used, including local timber and stone. Carbon-neutral, it is powered by hydroelectricity from the neighbouring farm.
The open plan living area is quite stunning with a handmade oak vaulted ceiling. Expect super-comfy leather sofas and fantastic views from the patio door. Underfloor heating and a nice little wood effect heater keep things cosy and warm.
The living area is separated from the generous sized kitchen by a few steps – it’s a kind of mezzanine layout. It is all immaculately and very stylishly presented. In the kitchen, smart new appliances include an electric oven and hob, microwave and coffee maker. There is a dining table for four.
A few more steps lead up to two bedrooms – one double and one twin – which are separated by a good-sized family bathroom. You’ll find more gorgeous fabrics and furnishings up here – the porcelain tiles in the bathroom are a thing of real beauty.
This beautiful secluded cottage at the foot of Yr Wyddfa has the most wonderful views from every window, and sleeps up to four guests. Outside there is a fantastic dining terrace, which comes with a stunning mountain backdrop. The Welsh Highland steam train chuffs past at regular intervals, and there is private access to Yr Wyddfa from the back door.
You’ll find Clogwyn-Mawr on the outskirts of the village of Rhyd Ddu at the foot of Yr Wyddfa. Rhyd Ddu is a friendly little village that comes complete with a traditional real ale pub (within walking distance of the cottage) as well as wonderful mountain views. There is also a great little tearoom in the town.
The Rhyd Ddu Path is probably one of the quieter routes to the top of Yr Wyddfa, and so this beautiful secluded cottage at the foot of Yr Wyddfa is a great choice for keen walkers and explorers who like to stray a little off the beaten track. It’s also a great location if you’d like to tackle Moel Hebog, Yr Aran or the Nantlle Ridge.
The Welsh Highland Railway stops at the station in the village and will huff and puff you to Caernarfon in one direction and Porthmadog in the other. The steam train passes the cottage several times a day – it’s a lovely sight and sound.
Rhyd Ddu is close to some of Eryri’s nicest towns and villages including Beddgelert, Betws-y-Coed and Llanberis. Stand out attractions in the area include Zip World, Antur Stiniog downhill mountain bike trails, and The Slate Caverns at Llechwedd – home to a deep mine tour, Zip Caverns, Zip Titan, and Bounce Below.
More traditional attractions include Caernarfon with its awe-inspiring 13th century fortress and the Italianate village of Portmeirion – home to the popular Festival No. 6. Rhyd Ddu is a great base for exploring most of Eryri.

Continue along this track for 100m before turning left onto another single lane track. Continue for a further 0.5 miles through farmland. The cottage is at the end of this lane.
