'Ty Gwair’ is a converted hay barn on a working welsh hill farm high up in the hills above Barmouth. This open plan studio cottage has a double bed up in the ‘grogloft’ or eaves of the barn accessed via a fixed ladder. So, although very popular with our regular guests, the ladder means that this studio would not suit anybody with any mobility problems.
A lovely little kitchenette with fridge, combination oven and hob which is set against the back wall of the cottage. A luxurious leather sofa sits facing onto a colour tv and living flame cast iron fire. There’s quite a spacious bathroom with a powerful shower, washbasin and wc.
A fixed ladder leads guests up to the grogloft. A double bed sits just under the eaves of the barn. A cosy romantic space with a nice view of the mountains behind the farm.
A private patio area in front of the cottage is a great suntrap during the afternoon. In the evening a shared garden (seldom used by our other guests) provides a perfect base from which to watch the sun as it dips down into the clear blue waters of Cardigan Bay.
There are lots of walks that can be enjoyed from the farm. There are maps and guides available in the cottage. Guests can wonder up to the rugged Rhinog Mountains or meander down through the village, which is about a mile from the farm, then on to the miles of sandy beaches that we are privileged to have in this part of Snowdonia.
The village provides all the basic needs for our guests. There’s a small grocery store, an excellent butchers, a post office, a garage and two cafés. If you want more choice a 15-minute journey in the car will take you to the bustling seaside town of Barmouth. A 15-minute drive to the north will take you to the renowned castle town of Harlech. Both towns have a slightly larger selection of shops, cafes and restaurants.
This part of north Wales is of course famous for outdoor activities. You can be zip lining at 100mph eighty feet above the ground in the morning and exploring historic slate caverns one mile below ground in the afternoon. Spend one-day white water rafting down the fierce Tryweryn River and the next climbing up the steep slopes of Wyddfa (Snowdon). You might prefer to throw yourself down the testing mountain biking trails of Coed Y Brenin or you might prefer a more relaxing day riding the narrow gauge Ffestiniog Steam train up to Tan Y Bwlch. The worlds your lobster here in Eryri (Snowdonia)!
