This community-run self catering chapel conversion provides an unique accommodation for up to 6 people in Llanystumdwy, a beautiful and friendly village in the heart of Eifionydd, and a stone’s throw away from the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park here in North Wales.

The property was recently purchased by Menter y Plu, a community enterprise in Llanystumdwy who also owns and runs the local pub, Tafarn y Plu. I like to think that one of the advantages of a self catering holiday over more traditional hotel breaks is that you get the opportunity to stay somewhere that’s a bit different. Quirky Capel Bach certainly doesn’t disappoint on that front. The conversion of this chapel has obviously been a labour of love. Features like the huge gymnasium doors that shield the kitchen can’t be found in a hardware store but hunted out, discovered and restored. It would have been easier to rip everything out perhaps and start again but original features like the pulpit and spindles have been retained and woven into the fabric of the new layout.

The high vaulted ceilings of the lounge give this space a sense of grandeur and history. As described, some huge and lovingly restored gymnasium doors subdivide the kitchen diner from the lounge. Their size and design ensuring the sense of space and light is maintained. A dishwasher, electric cooker and hob, microwave plus all the essentials are included. A washing machine and tumble dryer are located in a separate external building.

A door leads off the living room to a double bedroom, handily situated on the ground floor. The family bathroom has a corner bath with shower over and the usual washbasin and wc facilities.

From behind the pulpit in this unique self catering chapel conversion, two staircases ascend to the left and the right to two more, curtained off, double bedrooms. So a maximum of 6 people can be accommodated. The larger area on the left has additional seating in a more private space for relaxing perhaps.
