This community-run self catering chapel conversion provides an unique accommodation for up to 6 people in Llanystumdwy, a beautiful and friendly village in the heart of Eifionydd, and a stone’s throw away from the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park here in North Wales.

The property was recently purchased by Menter y Plu, a community enterprise in Llanystumdwy who also owns and runs the local pub, Tafarn y Plu. Be sure to pop by during your stay for a warm welcome and to find out more about this wonderful community, where over 70% of the population speaks Cymraeg.

I like to think that one of the advantages of a self catering holiday over more traditional hotel breaks is that you get the opportunity to stay somewhere that’s a bit different. Quirky Capel Bach certainly doesn’t disappoint on that front. The conversion of this chapel has obviously been a labour of love. Features like the huge gymnasium doors that shield the kitchen can’t be found in a hardware store but hunted out, discovered and restored. It would have been easier to rip everything out perhaps and start again but original features like the pulpit and spindles have been retained and woven into the fabric of the new layout.

The high vaulted ceilings of the lounge give this space a sense of grandeur and history. As described, some huge and lovingly restored gymnasium doors subdivide the kitchen diner from the lounge. Their size and design ensuring the sense of space and light is maintained. A dishwasher, electric cooker and hob, microwave plus all the essentials are included. A washing machine and tumble dryer are located in a separate external building.

A door leads off the living room to a double bedroom, handily situated on the ground floor. The family bathroom has a corner bath with shower over and the usual washbasin and wc facilities.

From behind the pulpit in this unique self catering chapel conversion, two staircases ascend to the left and the right to two more, curtained off, double bedrooms. So a maximum of 6 people can be accommodated. The larger area on the left has additional seating in a more private space for relaxing perhaps.

Mae'r capel hunanarlwyo hwn, sy'n cael ei redeg gan y gymuned, yn darparu llety unigryw i hyd at 6 o bobl yn Llanystumdwy, pentref hardd a chyfeillgar yng nghanol bro Eifionydd, a thafliad carreg i ffwrdd o Barc Cenedlaethol Eryri.

Prynwyd yr eiddo yn ddiweddar gan Fenter y Plu, menter gymunedol yn Llanystumdwy sydd hefyd yn berchen ar y dafarn leol, Tafarn y Plu. Gwnewch yn siwr eich bod yn galw heibio yn ystod eich arhosiad i gael croeso cynnes ac i ddarganfod mwy am y gymuned arbennig hon.

Rwy’n hoffi meddwl mai un o fanteision gwyliau hunanarlwyo dros wyliau gwesty mwy traddodiadol yw eich bod yn cael cyfle i aros yn rhywle sydd ychydig yn wahanol. Yn sicr, nid yw Capel Bach yn siomi yn hynny o beth. Mae trosi'r capel hwn yn amlwg wedi bod yn llafur cariad. Ni ellir dod o hyd i nodweddion fel drysau enfawr y gampfa sy'n cysgodi'r gegin mewn siop stryd fawr, ond yn hytrach rhaid oedd chwilota’n fanwl amdanynt a’u hadfer yn ofalus. Mae nodweddion gwreiddiol fel y pulpud a'r spindles wedi'u cadw a'u plethu i wead y cynllun newydd.

Mae nenfydau cromennog uchel y lolfa yn rhoi ymdeimlad o fawredd a hanes i'r gofod hwn. Fel y disgrifiwyd, mae drysau campfa enfawr sydd wedi'u hadfer yn gariadus yn gwahanu’r gegin o'r lolfa. Mae yma beiriant golchi llestri, popty a hob trydan, microdon a holl hanfodion arferol pob cegin da. Mae yna hefyd beiriant golchi a sychwr dillad mewn adeilad allanol.

Mae drws yn arwain oddi ar yr ystafell fyw i ystafell wely ddwbl, wedi'i lleoli'n hwylus ar y llawr gwaelod. Mae gan ystafell ymolchi y teulu faddon cornel gyda chawod drosto, yn ogystal â thoiled a sinc ymolchi.

O du ôl i'r pulpud, mae dau risiau'n esgyn i'r chwith a'r dde i ddwy ystafell wely ddwbl arall. Felly gellir lletya uchafswm o 6 o bobl yng Nghapel Bach.

Capel Bach is a Grade II listed property. It was converted into a self-catering property in the 90s, but prior to that, it was a chapel (Capel y Tabernacl). The village of Llanystumdwy is notably the boyhood home of former Prime Minister David Lloyd George. Lloyd George was raised in Highgate (directly opposite Capel Bach) and the cottage can be viewed as part of the amenities at the Lloyd George Museum (a stone’s throw away from Capel Bach). The village is also home to the local pub, Tafarn y Plu, recently purchased by Menter y Plu, a community enterprise in Llanystumdwy who own Capel-Bach, Ty Newydd Writing Centre and dozens of beautiful pathways which lead to all corners of our local area.

Llanystumdwy is a great base to explore the local and wider are, and you need not travel far. The Rabbit Farm, The Lloyd George Museum and Cricieth Castle are all within walking distance, whilst a short drive in the car or on public transport will take you to nearby beaches, villages, and towns or inland into the heart of Eryri for endless activities. In the evenings, Cricieth, Pwllheli, Porthmadog and the surrounding areas boasts wonderful dinning possibilities using fresh, local produce, and a warm welcome (and a cold drink) awaits you on your doorstep at Tafarn y Plu. There is also an information folder at the property which offers plenty of varied activities for all the family.

Mae Capel Bach yn eiddo rhestredig Gradd II. Cafodd ei drawsnewid yn eiddo hunanarlwyo yn y 90au, ond cyn hynny, roedd yn gapel (Capel y Tabernacl). Mae pentref Llanystumdwy yn nodedig fel cartref plentyndod y cyn Brif Weinidog, David Lloyd George. Magwyd Lloyd George yn Highgate (yn union gyferbyn â Capel Bach) a gellir gweld y bwthyn fel rhan o ddarpariaeth Amgueddfa Lloyd George (tafliad carreg i ffwrdd o Gapel Bach). Mae'r pentref hefyd yn gartref i Dafarn y Plu (drws nesaf), Canolfan Ysgrifennu Ty Newydd a dwsinau o lwybrau hardd sy'n eich arwain at bob cornel o'n hardal leol.

Mae Llanystumdwy yn ganolbwynt gwych i archwilio'r ardal leol, ac nid oes angen i chi deithio'n bell ‘chwaith. Mae’r Fferm Gwningod, Amgueddfa Lloyd George a Chastell Cricieth i gyd o fewn pellter cerdded, tra bydd taith fer yn y car neu ar drafnidiaeth gyhoeddus yn mynd â chi i draethau, pentrefi a threfi cyfagos neu at ganol Eryri ar gyfer tirwedd a gweithgareddau diddiwedd. Gyda'r nos, mae Cricieth, Pwllheli, Porthmadog a'r ardaloedd cyfagos yn cynnig amrywiaeth o fwytai a thafarndai gwych, yn defnyddio cynnyrch lleol, ac mae croeso cynnes (a diod oer) yn eich disgwyl ar stepen eich drws yn Tafarn y Plu. Mae ffolder gwybodaeth ar gael yn y Capel hefyd sy'n cynnig digon o weithgareddau amrywiol i'r teulu i gyd.
