If walls could talk, Plas Gwern Fawr - also known as Great Alder House - would likely have some very entertaining stories to tell, and almost certainly in a rather posh accent. This commanding Grade II listed estate, built in 1799, represents the pinnacle of a Luxury Georgian Manor North Wales. Sitting proudly at the foot of Moel Famau, it offers a level of "Lord of the Manor" grandeur that manages to be impressive without feeling like you aren’t allowed to sit on the furniture.

Our guided tour begins at the front porch, where the heavy door opens into a grand hallway that sets the tone for the rest of the house: original floorboards, high ceilings, and a sweeping staircase that practically begs for a dramatic entrance. To your right, the formal dining room is a masterclass in bold heritage design, featuring vibrant teal walls, a gorgeous chandelier, and a table that comfortably seats 12 for those memorable celebratory meals. Follow the scent of freshly brewed coffee into the heart of the home, where the huge country kitchen provides a sprawling, sociable space where flagstone floors meet high-end modern convenience. There is an electric Aga with three ovens for the serious cooks, but for those who prefer more conventional methods, a modern electric fan oven is also at your disposal. For more relaxed moments, retreat to the sitting room or the cosy snug, which features a warming wood burner and enough board games to settle family feuds for years to come.

The accommodation upstairs is thoughtfully split into wings, providing privacy for large groups and multi-generational families. On the first floor, the Master Suite is a true sanctuary featuring a superking-size four-poster bed, a large dedicated dressing room, and an en-suite bathroom with a freestanding roll-top bath. Also on this level, the Blue Room and the Garden Room provide bright, airy spaces with easy access to the main bathrooms, while the Venetian Suite offers its own private en-suite facilities.

Moving up to the second floor, the accommodation continues with the Twin Wing, featuring two comfortable single beds, and an additional room with a king-size bed and its own loo and sink - perfect for a bit of extra independence. For groups reaching the maximum capacity of 14, the ground-floor snug can be converted into an additional sleeping space using the high-quality sofa bed.

Indoor entertainment is taken seriously here; you can retreat to the handsome panelled games room for a competitive round of pool. Stepping outside, you'll find two acres of grounds with 360-degree panoramic views of the Vale of Clwyd. While there is a rustic undercover bar area for a cheeky sundowner, guests should note that the grounds are not secure, so extra care should be taken with wandering children and four-legged friends.
