Tucked away in a wooded valley near the Cambrian coast, Granar-Y-Rhiw is a detached stone barn conversion that blends rustic charm with modern touches and throws in a miniature Shetland pony for good measure. Sleeping up to 8 across four bedrooms, it’s the perfect escape for families, groups, and anyone who thinks “quiet” and “quality cheese” are key holiday criteria.
The heart of the home is a light-filled kitchen-diner that combines contemporary units with exposed stone and slate floors ideal for family meals, lengthy breakfasts, or just arguing over who forgot to pack the ketchup. The lounge next door is cosy and relaxed, with a crackling log burner, comfy sofas, and a TV for rainy afternoons or post-walk slumps.
Downstairs is a neat double bedroom with walk-in wardrobe. Upstairs, the master bedroom includes an oak-framed bed and an en-suite bathroom with a high-end Matki shower enclosure and Roper Rhodes fixtures because country charm should still come with good plumbing. There’s also a charming triple single room (ideal for kids), plus a single bedroom that’s simple but snug.
The family bathroom upstairs features a Roper Rhodes rainwater shower over the bath, a heated towel rail, and an LED mirror that makes even early starts look good. A shared laundry area on-site helps keep things practical.
Outside, Granar-Y-Rhiw is surrounded by well-tended lawns, woodland walks, and wildlife in all directions. There’s a patio with outdoor seating, a children’s play area with swings and a slide, and a supporting cast of resident animals including a horse, pig and chickens. It’s part of a small cluster of five holiday cottages on a 13-acre smallholding but being detached, it feels wonderfully private.
The property is pet-friendly (woof!), child-friendly (yay!), and parent-friendly (wine and WiFi). Better still, it’s less than 3 miles to the sandy beaches of Aberporth and Penbryn, and within easy striking distance of the Ceredigion Coast Path, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, and the friendly market town of Cardigan.
Set at the end of a quiet, no-through road in a wooded Ceredigion valley, Granar-Y-Rhiw offers peace, privacy, and a real “middle-of-nowhere” feel without being more than a mile from a pub or a few minutes from the sea. The 13-acre smallholding it sits on is a working bit of countryside, complete with curious farm animals and gently rolling views in all directions.
Kids will adore the safe, enclosed grounds, play equipment, and wide-open spaces. Adults tend to gravitate to the bench outside with a bottle of something and a well-earned exhale. Dogs, meanwhile, will love the trails and footpaths right from the door.
You’re under 3 miles from the sweeping sands of Aberporth and Tresaith, and close to the quieter bays of Penbryn and Mwnt ideal for picnics, bodyboarding, or hunting for dolphins. The Ceredigion Coast Path offers breathtaking views and manageable walks, while the historic town of Cardigan provides shops, eateries, and culture just 10 minutes away.
From Cardigan take A487 towards Aberystwyth for 3 miles, continuing through the village of Penparc. Soon after you leave Penparc, there is a school on your left at the top of the hill. Turn right immediately opposite the school and follow the lane down the hill for about a mile, bearing right at the bottom just before the bridge. Troedyrhiw is at the end of the lane (approximately 300 yards).
If you are coming from Aberystwyth direction, you will be travelling on the A487 (Aberystwyth to Cardigan road).
